The Isle of Anglesey County Council is committed, through its Teaching service, to ensure that all pupils in their care possess equal skills in both Welsh and English at the end of formal education within the Authority.

In the case of most pupils, acquiring skills in both languages is a natural process which runs throughout their school career, but this is not true of every pupil.

To secure fairness to pupils joining Anglesey schools at Key Stage 2 without the necessary Welsh language skills, the Authority has two Welsh Immersion Centres, one in Ysgol Moelfre and the other in Ysgol Cybi, Holyhead. Late arrivals into our system spend a term in the Centre as soon as is practically possible after moving onto the Island, being transported from home and back daily for a term.

During their time in the Centre, under the guidance of very experienced language teachers, intense tuition is given in a structured and sympathetic way that the pupils enjoy.  Years of experience tell us that the time spent at the Centre is a fantastic investment in the future. In about a term the children absorb the necessary elements of the language and become accomplished Welsh speakers. When they return to their mother school, they can work, learn and play in both languages and in doing so, fit into school life effortlessly, confidently and happily.

Additionally an aftercare service is also provided to pupils who require extra assistance, pupils who have missed periods of schooling in the Authority or have difficulties assimilating all the necessary skills to be able to fully converse in the language.

The County Council prides itself in this system and is totally committed to ensuring that all pupils can take advantage of the necessary linguistic skills to enable them to live, work and to be fully integrate into the bilingual community which characterises the part of Wales in which they live and beyond. Evidence shows us that both pupils and parents very much appreciate the service provided to them through this scheme.
